Zambézia: Crocodiles kill 27

(2012-04-24) 34 people died in attacks by wild animals in the central Mozambican province of Zambezia, according to a report delivered to President Armando Guebuza, who is on a five day working visit to the province.

The vast majority of attacks were by crocodiles, who accounted for 27 of the deaths. A further six people were killed by hippopotamus, and just one by a buffalo.

As might have been expected, the majority of the deaths took place in districts that are on the banks of the Zambezi river – Chinde, Mopeia and Morrumbala districts accounted for 23 of the deaths.

The provincial authorities authorised the killing of 96 crocodiles, eight hippos and one buffalo. The document made no comparison with figures for previous years.

In addition, a further 116 animals were shot legally as a result of the issuing of 21 hunting licences.

Guebuza has now interrupted his visit to Zambezia in order to fly to Malawi where he is scheduled to attend the funeral on Monday of the late Malawian President, Bingu wa Mutharika.
