Portuguese airport manager negotiates Lisbon-Beijing route with Air China
(2012-05-26) Portuguese state airport management company ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal is negotiating a direct flight between Lisbon and Beijing with Air China, the assistant director of Lisbon Airport, Francisco Vieira Pita said Thursday in Lisbon.
On the sidelines of the presentation of the Dubai-Lisbon route launched by Emirates Airlines, which is the first direct link between Lisbon and the Middle East, Vieira Pita said that, “Beijing is still one of the routes that we are focusing on because it is one of the links that we think would be very interesting.”
Confirming that negotiations were underway with Air China to run the Lisbon-Beijing route, Vieira Pita noted that, “these are complicated an drawn out processes,” and gave the example that talks with Emirate Airlines began in 2008 and were only now paying off.
“We have around 200,000 passengers per year visiting Asia, but in an indirect way, travelling to other European airports and that has been identified as a strategic gap,” he said, cited by Portuguese financial daily Diário Económico.
