(2013-07-20) A Portuguese businessman was been kidnapped in the Mozambican capital, Maputo, on Tuesday, reports the Portuguese news agency, Lusa.
According to Maputo City police spokesperson Orlando Modumane, he was seized from the office in downtown Maputo where he runs a food company.
Lusa reports that the victim was gagged and bundled into a car. The kidnappers then destroyed surveillance video.
The Portuguese Consulate confirmed the kidnapping but referred other question to the police.
This is the first case of a Portuguese citizen being kidnapped in Mozambique. Previous cases have involved people of Asian origin.
In March, Attorney-General Augusto Paulino told the country’s parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, that in 2012 there were 14 cases of kidnapping followed by ransom demands.
Paulino attributed the kidnappings to organised crime. He noted that the criminals selected their victims carefully, in order to extract large sums of money through blackmailing and threatening the victims and their relatives.
