(2010-12-03) Voyage au Mozambique: Maputo (published in 2005) is an ode to the city that recognises that the object of its affection has lost much of its former grandeur, yet can still find many things to admire and celebrate.
The writing is almost lyrical as it describes the city, past and present, and capably evokes the warmth and character of the place and its people.
The photographs amply illustrate the text and capture some truths and colour of their own.
Small vignettes bring to life its residents, whether they be famous figures or the man or woman on the street.
As Maputo celebrates 123 years of existence, perhaps those responsible for running the city today might be inspired by this book not only to restore some of its crumbling heritage, but also to plan ahead for its future growth – and glory.
Text in Portuguese and French.
