(2009-01-20) Green Power Holding AG of Switzerland and AgroPecuaria de Manica have signed a joint venture agreement regarding the development of Jatropha and foodcrops in Mozambique.

According to a press release sent by Whataba Investiments, both partners will expand AgroPecuarias current farm in Manica province by planting urgently needed foodcrops (soya, beans and cowpeas) and Jatropha for the longer term supply as a sustainable biofuel.

The jointly developed concept of ifbf (integrated food and biofuel production) solves the dilemma of food vs. fuel : higher quality soils and irrigation is used to produce foodcrops whereas marginal areas on the farms are used for the longer term production of Jatropha.

The company, states the release, supports also outgrowers in the region by providing seedlings, know how and uptake agreements.

The press release we are quoting says also that the joint vision is to contribute to a growing food supply in the country, offer employment and contribute to a ecological friendly supply of biofuels by reducing usage of charcoal and thus deforestation as well as import substitution of fossil fuel."
